poem: The Orange [Sep. 4th, 2007|08:39 pm]
[Tags|, ]

The Orange

dinner.
after dinner,
an orange

its gleaming flesh has taunted me for days
memories of a sweet day on the beach
sweet kisses
sweet embraces
sweet kisses

I venture an exploratory bite.
Tender, watery, overripe,
I take a bigger bite.

With each piece taken I take a larger piece,
wolfing down the segments of the orange.
A mound of peels in the trash.

The last of the peels, the last of the orange,
I sigh and lick my lips.

Walking slowly away, I unwrap the coup de grĂ¢ce:

the chocolate.

June was... interesting [Jul. 16th, 2007|08:50 pm]
[Tags|, ]

June was an interesting month.  Encouraged by [info]theotheo , I started doing selfportraits again a few days before I shaved my head -- a rather big transition.  Images #3 and #4 were completed on either side of another boundary, a date.  In all, the self-portraits are completely different, and serve as loud signposts for my work in the future.

Image #1 in pencil, was executed two days before #2, in one of my favorite calligraphic pens.  Both images were done in a similar manner. Starting at one corner, I furiously scribble the hairline: down one side, down around the chin, then up the other side.  My beard-hair is naturally layered and somewhat scraggly, which made it a lot of fun to draw.

Then, I shaved my head.

No more hair, I had to re-learn how to draw the face without such an entertaining anchor line.  In the first portrait post-shave, I guess I wasn't quite used to how I looked: I resemble an axe murderer more than my normal sweet if pointy-headed self.

After the second boundary, I was overflowing with energy.  Rather than lazily noodling around with a drawing or two, I feverishly drew for hours -- about 20 sketches -- until the tide had passed, and I slept.  In the blue sketch I really like the sculptural and moody aspects of the work.  People say they like the bounciness, the aliveness in my work.

With so much drawing happening in a short period, I really feel I've passed a creative turning point!

4th in numbers [Jul. 5th, 2007|10:09 am]

[mood | calm]
[music |Steve Reich - Music for 18 Musicians]

Weather was really overcast and cool, a bit of a change from the hot sunny summery days of the previous week. After waking up late, breakfasting, lounging, then napping, my 4th started properly around five:

- parties attended: 2
- young hotties: >20
- DC/Baltimore people found: 2
- artist/writer/teachers chatted with: 1
- numbers acquired: 0 (boo)
- beers consumed: ~5
- .. burgers: 2
- discussions on Peter Lorre: 1
- fantastically drunken renditions of "America the Beautiful" overheard: 1
- portions of "Naked Lunch" watched: 1

all in all, a good day!

how was yours?

signal achievements of the last week [Jul. 1st, 2007|08:52 pm]

[mood | complacent]

- just now: cumin-garlic veggies over udon, yum

- Sat: walk on the Boardwalk w/ friend -- very lively tourist scene, hilarious

- Fri: Beer Worship.  Saw friends play for the first time as SugarBitch -- they were great!  Also hung out with friends, and saw a happy old woman dance her ass off.  Wonderful two-mile walk from the Pier.

- Thu: zucchini risotto, yum

- Wed: sketching workshop! Also met another very rare art-geek

- Tue: my plans fell apart, which sucked, but now I know this

This week will be odd with the Wednesday out.  Maybe that's the excuse to make a run to the zoo!

life update [Jun. 17th, 2007|09:16 pm]
[Tags|]

- just finished reading "Treasure Island."  The tale betrays that it was written in installments for magazine publication, and its audience: 10 year old boys.  But, its plot and glaring neon characters and affectations were deeply hilarious and a fun read.  Next: "Kidnapped!"

- finished "Trouble is my Business", a Raymond Chandler short story collection.  The plots are byzantine, the characters mysterious, the violence sometimes overwhelming.  Highly recommended.

- Ventured to Little Japan last night in search of groceries.  Enjoyed repartee with friends, and discovered new and mysterious food packets.  My favorite was the horrid rubber-looking octopus, clearly a snack, labeled "Party!"  R insisted the dozens of brightly-colored quarter-sized crabs in another packet were eatable.    Having grown up in Maryland, I'll have to disagree on the viability of eating crab shells.

After, we enjoyed the traditional male bonding activity of eating fresh creampuffs at Beard Papa.   The surreality of being served  delicacies by 15 year old Japanese girls wearing eight inch tall chef's hats is always a treat.

- Sunday: walked up to the crowded Farmer's Market, but didn't get molested by beautiful intelligent women.  Maybe I'll go earlier next week.

Food: green tea ice cream, Kalamata olive bread.   Dinner: curried baby bokchoy with cherry tomatoes over rice.  Yum!
